LTI Request Form

FormsLTI Request Form

LTI stands for Learning Tools Interoperability and is an integration standard for third party tools. Canvas supports LTI which allows third party tools to be easily integrated and used within Canvas. Because student data like assignment grades may be passed back and forth through the LTI, Teaching & Learning Technologies does software tests, as well as security and legal reviews, for each LTI before we can make it available for use by instructors and students.

What LTI Tools are available in Canvas?

The Following tools are available system wide

The follwing tools can be installed at college, department and course level

Note that several tools are currently in pilot and available for use. In addition, some colleges and departments also have specific tools available for their faculty to use.

How do I request a new LTI tool to be added to Canvas?

Complete our LTI Request form. Completing all fields in this form with up-to-date and detailed information will ensure the review and approval process runs smoothly. Additional information may be requested after the initial review.

If the app is approved, Teaching & Learning Techologies staff will install it on the test version of Canvas. After the app is tested, and no technical issues are identified, it will be installed on the production version of Canvas and available for instructor to use.  Because of the many technical and university policy requirements, the time between from submission and installation of the app on the live version of Canvas may take up to a semester to complete.

Please note that installation of new tools will happen prior to the start of terms to minimize disruption to users. There is a four week moratorium on installations two weeks prior to the first day of classes through two weeks after the first day of classes. There are schedule regular change moratoriums throughout the year as approved by the UIT/ITS Change Advisory Board. View this knowledge article to see the current change moratorium schedule.

What concerns are there for LTI tools?

  • FERPA/Privacy
  • Security
  • Cost
  • Level of installation (some tools can only be installed system wide while others can be installed at the college/department or course level)
  • Copyright/ownership of content and how content may be used by the vendor
  • Terms of Service/License Agreements (which may be between an institution and the vendor or between individual users and the vendor)

 How are these concerns addressed?

Teaching & Learning Technologies (TLT), University Information Technology (UIT), Undergraduate Studies (UGS) the Campus Bookstore, and Center for Teaching & Learning Excellence (CTLE) are all consulted as needed as part of the review, approval, and testing process.
